Mental vitality the natural way: Brahmi and Gotu Kola

Introduction: The ayurvedic superherbs for mental clarity and a healthy nervous system

Brahmi and Gotu Kola: Bacopa monnieri and Centella asiatica are two different herbs used in Ayurveda, each with its own set of properties and potential health benefits. Brahmi is a common name for two different Ayurvedic herbs, which leads to confusion about their identity, especially as they are both used to support and enhance brain function.

Origin of the names, in search of the “true” Brahmi

The answer is quite simple, Brahmi is used to mean Bacopa Monnieri in South India and Centella Asiatica in North India, hence the origin of duplication and confusion. We use the name Brahmi to refer to Bacopa Monnieri, and we use Gotu Kola to refer to Centella Asiatica.

Our aim is to “help you understand the differences between these two powerful herbs and how they work together to boost brain function and help keep the central nervous system (CNS) healthy.”1

What are the key differences between Brahmi and Gotu Kola?

Bacopa Monnieri

Brahmi has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for cognitive support and nervous system health. Unlike many brain-boosting substances that can overstimulate and wear out brain cells, bacopa stands out for its ability to nourish the nervous system while enhancing brain function, protecting the brain, and improving memory. The key components in bacopa monnieri, known as bacosides, belong to a group of chemicals called triterpenoid saponins.

Studies have demonstrated that bacosides help increase blood flow to the brain. These antioxidants for the brain stimulate neurotransmitters, providing protection for the nerves. While bacopa benefits various brain functions, it particularly excels in supporting healthy cognitive function, improved memory and focus, clarity, mood, and learning.2

It is a more suitable choice in case of aggravated pitta.

Centella Asiatica

Gotu Kola is also a popular herb in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to enhance mental performance and cognitive function. However, centella asiatica has more diverse properties, beyond supporting a healthy brain and nervous system. It is also renowned for its potential health benefits for our skin and lymph through improved microcirculation. Gotu Kola is one of the best all-around herbs for pitta imbalances, a deeply nourishing, rejuvenative herb that is ideal for pitta dosha.

Scientific research shows that the compounds in centella asiatica, called brahmosides and brahminosides, have antioxidant properties. They help boost neurotransmitters and reduce stress hormones. As a result, these compounds detoxify the brain, neutralise harmful free radicals, and support a positive mood, cognitive function, and improved memory.3

Introducing Bacopa Monnieri: Brahmi

The brain, with its high iron content, is vulnerable to oxidation damage. While natural antioxidants struggle to reach the brain due to the blood-brain barrier, bacosides in Bacopa Monnieri can traverse this barrier, providing a shield against oxidative agents.1

Brahmi plays a crucial role in preventing lipid oxidation in the brain, particularly significant as the brain is predominantly composed of cholesterol, prone to oxidation damage. Recent research highlights the brain’s cleansing process through cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), which flushes toxins into brain glymphatics. Test subjects supplemented with Bacopa Monnieri were shielded from cognitive decline and oxidative damage in the brain and central nervous system.4

Additionally, Bacopa Monnieri helps keep the blood flow in the brain healthy, supporting the systematic ‘washing of the brain’, removing toxins. It also helps to boost the natural production of brain-derived neurotrophic factors, which play a key role in generating new neurons, enabling Bacopa Monnieri to aid in replacing old brain cells with new ones.1

  • Virya – Heat effect: cooling
  • Dosha impact: has a balancing effect on all three doshas, aggravates vata in excess. Particularly beneficial for individuals with Pitta imbalances.

Introducing Centella Asiatica: Gotu Kola

Centella asiatica has a rich composition of bioactive compounds, prominently featuring triterpenoid saponins along with distinctive elements such as asiaticosides, brahmosides, brahminosides, and centellosides. These compounds contribute to the herb’s diverse range of properties. Asiaticosides, one of the key triterpenoids, play a pivotal role in Centella asiatica’s therapeutic effects. These compounds are known to stimulate collagen synthesis, promoting skin health and aiding in wound healing by facilitating tissue regeneration. Additionally, asiaticosides have neuroprotective qualities, contributing to cognitive benefits by safeguarding neurons from oxidative stress and inflammation.

Brahmosides, brahminosides, and centellosides further contribute to the herb’s multifaceted health benefits. These compounds support the lymphatic system, assisting in detoxification processes within the body. Centellosides are responsible for skin health and microcirculation, making it a valuable ingredient in skincare due to their potential to enhance skin structure and elasticity.

Another study shows that Centella Asiatica increases the gastric mucin and glycoprotein secretion, which maintain structural integrity and function of the stomach lining. Gotu Kola is often used externally, with its paste applied to wounds to aid in the healing process.
