🌿 Breathing easy: July is the time to focus on the lungs in the annual health promotion programme💚

The lungs provide the oxygen for all our cells and tissues to function, making it an essential organ in our body. It is responsible for delivering prana, or vital life force, to the body. The respiratory system is called ‘Prana Vaha Srotas‘ in Ayurveda, as this channel transports the life-sustaining energy. It includes the nose, sinuses, trachea and lungs. Maintaining a balance between Vata (air) and Kapha (water) doshas is key to ensuring optimal lung function. Imbalances in these doshas can lead to respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis and allergies.

Ayurveda also emphasizes the close connection between lung health and the digestive system (Amashaya). Proper digestion and elimination of toxins (Ama) are important for maintaining healthy lungs. During digestion, mucous is produced, when this builds up excess fluid in our lungs, which is then released to different parts of the body. People withKapha’s body type are most likely to suffer from respiratory-related illnesses: flu, sore throat, swollen glands, asthma. To strengthen the lungs and the respiratory system, Ayurveda recommends pranayama (breathing exercises) and nasyas (application of nasal oil) and the use of natural herbs and spices.

Respiratory and lung health from an Ayurvedic perspective

According to Ayurveda, lung and respiratory health problems occur when there is an excess or deficiency of certain doshas (biological energies) in the body. These doshas – VataPitta and Kapha – control various physiological and psychological functions. Lung function is primarily influenced by Kapha dosha, which regulates the structure and fluid balance of the respiratory system.

  • When Kapha dosha is in excess, it can lead to overproduction of mucous, making the chest feel heavy, as if something is pressing on the lungs and nasal congestion makes breathing difficult. Kapha excess can be caused, for example, by overeating heavy, cold, sweet foods and a lack of exercise.
  • The build-up of Pitta (fire) energy in the airways can result in inflammationinfections or burning sensations. Pitta excess can be caused by over consumption of hot and spicy foods, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine or mental overload
  • Excess Vata (air) can cause dry mouth, feeling weak, hoarseshortness of breath or irregular breathing. TBC is also typically a Vata related condition. Vata excess can be caused by sudden exposure to cold, extreme dehydration, chronic fatigue, consumption of cold foods and drinks.

Herbal remedies for healthy airways and lungs

Traditional Ayurvedic medicine uses herbs and spices to strengthen and support the healthy functioning of the airways and lungs. There are many excellent spices and herbs available to support the body’s oxygen supply, help reduce mucus and also natural expectorants and relieve coughs.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is excellent for lung health due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Ginger(Zingiber officinale) stimulates digestion, eliminates excess mucus and strengthens lung function. Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) soothes the respiratory tract and helps to relieve coughs. Pepper (Piper longum) strengthens lung function and helps clear the airways.

Tulsi

Holy basil, also known as Tulsi, is one of the most revered medicinal plants in Ayurveda known for its benefits on the lungs and respiratory health. Its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties help to soothe the airways, clear mucous and fight respiratory infections. Regular consumption of Tulsi tea or herbal powders boosts lung function and thus the oxygen supply of the body. It reduces nasal congestion and supports healthy airway function.

Amla - indiai egres

Amla

Indian gooseberry, or Amla, Amalaki , is a potent Ayurvedic herb known for its antioxidant properties and high vitamin C content. Amla strengthens the immune system, which is essential for maintaining a healthy respiratory tract. It helps reduce inflammation in the lungs, supports lung tissue repair and enhances respiratory function.

Trikatu

Trikatu is a traditional Ayurvedic blend of black pepper, long pepper and ginger. This potent combination acts as a natural expectorant, helping to clear excess mucous from the lungs and airways. Trikatu enhances digestive fire (agni), which is essential for healthy metabolism and proper detoxification, indirectly supporting lung health. It is often used in Ayurvedic preparations to support respiratory function and help with conditions such as bronchitis and asthma.

Sitopaladi

Sitopaladi is a classic ayurvedic remedy made from a blend of herbs and spices, including cane sugar, pepper, cardamom and cinnamon. It is highly effective in treating respiratory problems such as coughs, colds and bronchitis. Sitopaladi helps to clear mucous, soothe irritated tissues and increase lung capacity. It is usually taken with honey to relieve respiratory symptoms and support lung health.

Dietary recommendations and yoga exercises

To promote a healthy respiratory system, ayurveda recommends regular pranayama (breathing exercises) and dietary adjustments to balance the doshas, for example avoiding cold and heavy foods that increase kapha (water) energy. A kapha-reducing diet is usually recommended for colds and respiratory illnesses. It is best to avoid dairy products, meat, bread and pasta. Sweet food is also not good for you.
